Description:
Brunello takes on Weinberg's 20th century masterpiece, the Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello, on a 17th century instrument. Mario Brunello has been actively releasing albums of Bach and other Baroque works on four-string cello piccolo under the ARCANA label in recent years. This time, he returned to the regular cello and recorded Weinberg's four sonatas, one of the masterpieces of the 20th century for unaccompanied cello, using his favorite instrument, the famous Mazzini. The second of these sonatas was composed in 1965 and published as Op. 86, but the version recorded here is a greatly revised version from 1977. The highly technical and concentrated performance of this piece is a deep and detailed depiction of the sometimes meditative, sometimes humorous, and sometimes agitated ideas of the piece.
