The 17th New York Infantry was a military unit established during the U.S. Civil War. Originally known as the "Irish Brigade," this infantry regiment was part of the Union Army, primarily serving in the Eastern Theater of the war. The 17th New York Infantry participated in several significant battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania Court House. Notable for its high casualty rates, particularly during the Battle of Fredericksburg, the regiment was disbanded in August 1864 after heavy losses at the Battle of Deep Bottom. The 17th New York Infantry's service played a crucial role in the eventual victory of the Union.
